A penthouse apartment, locked doors and windows, no signs of forced entry, two bodies; the married couple who lived there are dead. Everything points to smoke inhalation, since a fire had been lit in the fireplace. But the medical examiner discovers unusual injuries in the neck region on both bodies. The autopsy reveals: she died from a broken neck; he was strangled—probably with a rope. The two investigate and uncover even more cold cases that follow the same pattern. A call about yet another crime scene reinforces their conviction that something is terribly wrong—and that supernatural forces may even be at play.
